DONATE a bike!

Do you have a bike that's just collecting dust?

DONATE IT to an eager pair of legs!

Drop off your bicycle at Allegro Cyclery on the corner of Spokane St. and Main St. in downtown Walla Walla!

Depending on the condition of the bicycle, we may use it to:
  1. Teach bike repair at our Bikery Repair program.
  2. Fix it up for a middle schooler to ride in our new middle school bike club!
  3. Or a high schooler may use it to race for the CCY Junior Cycling Team!
So get that bicycle out of the garage and put it to good use!

More Xtracycle bike on bike action; and an advert.

Part of what I like about the Xtracycle is just how easy it is to 'toss' anything on there. The long bags swallow up anything from a bag-less grocery store trip, to large coolers. The long deck has lots of surface area for your friend's bum, to set your purse down as you rummage through it, or-- for a bicycle.

There IS a technique for 'towing' a bike behind the Xtracycle, by strapping the front wheel in and letting the rear wheel roll. I, unfortunately, have not been able to accomplish this. My bike has ended up skidding instead of rolling in just seconds. The key, I've been told, is to make sure the front wheel is strapped in well. I think I will continue to scheme my own "Tray Bien", though I will give the towing method a try soon.

If you're wondering what it is, other than a bicycle, I've got strapped on there-- it's an advertisement! I do plan to take it back after only a few days, though. Once any surface is written on, it only invites more writing-- so I am, sadly, anticipating vandalism on the bike and perhaps some missing parts. (Although I did put some rubber cement in the seat tube...)

"Does anyone here like bicycles?"

Last Friday I walked around the lunch room of our local high school with flyers for The Bikery (a repair shop for youth to learn bike mechanics and critical thinking skills and have a chance to earn a bike) and as I approached each clump of kids I asked, "does anyone here like bicycles?"

It was interesting to watch their eyes flicker across the faces of those chewing on chicken strips around them. Does Jane like bicycles? Does Joe like bicycles? Do I like bicycles? A representative of the group would finally commit, "Well, what kind of bicycles?" or "No, not really." Then most everyone agreed. Sometimes fingers were literally pointed across the round table, "hey, don't you like bicycles?" I slide the flyer their direction. Well. We're starting a bike repair club..

The Bikery: Repair Shop!

I've mentioned the Junior Cycling Team that I'm coaching. The other program that I am designing, running and managing is The Bikery: A Bicycle Repair Shop for Youth.  (I do get paid for this, by the way. I'm not THAT amazing.) I've been working with the local high school to use their space-- so things have taken longer than I'd have liked them to (it is a government institution), but we are finally about to be up and running! Aaah! I have to admit, I've been more focused on the team since I've been reaping more success on that front and I have kids on the team NOW. Working with an active program and making it better is more fun than struggling to start a program. Time to turn the burners on. We're opening shop in just over a week!

An Announcement & a Search

It's official. I am the new Bikery director and cycling coach.

A few years ago, my Whitman Cycling teammate, Greg Dering, and I started a program called 'the Bikery' to teach bike repair (and indirectly, critical thinking skills and life lessons) to youth in Walla Walla. The program was funded by and based out of the Walla Walla Community Center for Youth. Since Greg and I left, a junior cycling team did sprout, but the Bikery has remained only sporadically alive. Now the WWCCY has hired me on to tackle the Bikery and coach the junior team. The potential in my brain is exploding.

BUT! One step at a time. We need a space. The Bikery, you see, doesn't currently have a home. The Bikery is a bunch of tools and an old curriculum binder stashed in a closet. We are looking for a space that is:

-Somewhat central (e.g., the airport is too far east)
-Free, or very cheap
-Safe and secure
-A place we can leave tools and some bikes

Have ideas? Leads? Contacts?
